Cuil – cool search engine

Thanks to Ciscotips blog post, today I discovered Cuil search engine (Cuil is an old Irish word for knowledge). Cuil is a web search engine with the world’s biggest Web page database (so far it has indexed over 120 billion Web pages).

Cuil info web page:

“… Cuil searches more pages on the Web than anyone else—three times as many as Google and ten times as many as Microsoft. Rather than rely on superficial popularity metrics, Cuil searches for and ranks pages based on their content and relevance. When we find a page with your keywords, we stay on that page and analyze the rest of its content, its concepts, their inter-relationships and the page’s coherency.”

It has some nice features:

  • Drilldown
  • Roll-over definitions
  • Tabs
  • Navigation suggestion

People behind this search engine worked for Google. :)

CNet review: Is Cuil (new search engine) really so Cool?

Check it out – here’s a screenshot:

Cuil is definitely going for it, but it’s hard to imagine them doing anything but incremental changes to what Google’s done. And even that would take years of effort.

Me.dium.com has taken a different tack. We have a full web index, but we change the results based on the surfing activity of our user base (now over 2,000,000). It’s in alpha, but I’d be curious to hear your thoughts. http://me.dium.com/search

Hi Jennifer! Thank you for your comment.

You’ve made a good point about Cuil. I completely agree with you. Your search engine is also great in it’s own special way. I’ll surely give it a look.
