Ubuntu 7.10 Compiz Fusion + torrents for all editions

Get Ubuntu page

New Ubuntu 7.10, code named Gutsy Gibbon, is awesome.

Compiz Fusion desktop effects now come pre-installed.

Basic settings for Compiz-Fusion are found in “System > Preferences > Appearance”. In the Appearance applet, tab “Visual Effects” gives only three choices : “None” “Normal” and – “Extra” >> this is what you need.

To fine tune Compiz-Fusion you have to install compizconfig-settings-manager. To do this open your console and type this command:

    sudo aptitude install compizconfig-settings-manager

This will add an entry to your System > Preferences menu listed as “Advanced Desktop Effects Settings”. You can read more about compizconfig-settings-manager here:

In earlier versions of Ubuntu you had to manually install all Compiz packages and configure it yourself after you’ve installed graphic card drivers – also manually. Those were the times. It was very buggy, but if you managed to do it, it would look awesome. The feeling to have Cube with virtual desktops rolling on your screen was phenomenal.

I remember I had a small problem. When my system booted, I successfully logged in, then manually started Beryl. Everything worked fine until I logged out. Then my screen was full of blurry and fast moving pixels. I could log in only by using Tab to move from user name and password fields, or to reset my machine or by pressing, if I recall correctly, Ctrl+Esc or Ctrl-Alt-Del.

Now, have a look at next two videos hosted on YouTube (or as we say in Croatia – yubito ;) ) which show how Compiz effects look like in Gutsy Gibbon.

A have to repeat it – Awesome!!!

Gutsy DVD edition

It’s interesting how there is no Gutsy DVD edition direct download link on the official Ubuntu download page. They only offer three possibilities:

“Download Ubuntu now for free, request a free CD or buy it on DVD or CD.”

If you want to download the Ubuntu dvd edition, I found direct links to Gutsy torrents. I decided to download Ubuntu 7.10 x86 DVD version – the download speed was ~1,8MB/s – very nice . Can’t wait to install it on my AMD machine.

The Ubuntu DVD combines the functions of the Desktop and Alternate Install.

And here are the torrents:
